NEC, through its business goals and corporate citizenship, is committed to
the fulfillment of human potential. NEC has made the support of initiatives
that help people with disabilities a priority of its corporate philanthropy.
It is a daily challenge for people with disabilities to achieve full
participation in society and realize their human potential. NEC's
sponsorship of Wheelchair Tennis makes the participation in one of the most
challenging and exciting of all Wheelchair sports possible for thousands of
disabled athletes.
NEC has sponsored the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour since 1992, the NEC
Wheelchair Tennis Masters since 1994, and the Japan Wheelchair Tennis
Association's (JWTA) Wheelchair Tennis Masters since 1991. Sanctioned by
the International Wheelchair Tennis Federation (IWTF) and the International
Tennis Federation (ITF), the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour includes more than
118 tournaments in 32 countries worldwide. As the most prestigious event on
the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour, the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters invites
the top eight men and women based on the ranking after the US Open at the
end of the year. The NEC Masters is the most coveted trophy amongst the top
wheelchair players.
All of these events provide opportunities for people with disabilities to
participate in social and sports activities, to enjoy competitive tennis,
and to share experiences with people with and without disabilities of all
age groups. The NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters provides an opportunity to
show the general public and the media that wheelchair tennis played at its
highest level is both inspirational and very exciting to watch. Wheelchair
tennis follows the same rules as regular tennis except that the wheelchair
tennis player is allowed two bounces of the ball. In addition to competitive
tennis, NEC supports popularization of this sport for beginners and children
in Asia through grass-rooted Wheelchair Tennis workshops.
